Lesson 9

Editorial:
Cut me Mickey...I can take it!

Heroes and Villains
Final. - Sequence 1# The Chase
ENJOY

Summary :
found out that this was a pretty fast scene, so some of the shots should be in slow motion. I think the continuity is clear, but maybe it would be better if I added some more in between shots,
but I think it reads as it is.
Maybe I'll change some camera compositions to make the
action even more epic, slow motion should do that too.
maybe take them back up in the air somehow. The sequence might be too short.
but I think I'm satisfied for now :)
Wanted to make an animatic for the final, for example: 21sec
(shot 7. in The Storyboard #1 RE Finished from Lesson 8).
I wanted to make his pupil go across is eye looking back.

I am still trying to get my drawings even more loose, I tend to spend to much time on one drawing sometimes. need to loosen up more to get more opportunity and life into it !
getting there ... :)

Lesson 8

Pitching:
Who keeps spitting on my curveball?

as the story develops, I feel that I had to make some more Re-boarding. adding more action shots, possibly more close ups during the action. changed the drop down of Robo villain, brought the building behind him for an easier read of scene direction, and clearer continuity.
Never tried pitching before, well at least not in English.
I just used Preview, and manually directed the slideshow
( default image viewer for mac ).
edited it a bit with iMovie.
ENJOY :)

Lesson 7

Breaking Story:
It only hurts a little...until it hurts a lot.

Plot Summary
the story is about two boys, with seriously wild imaginations.
one playing the hero and the other the villain.
the starting sequence is the SuperHero Sequence, as an introduction to the seriousness of their imagination. as they play, in many different universes, as Super Heroes, Cowboys, Space Marines, Ninjas, Pirates and Soldiers, they let their imagination run wild.
so at one time something unexpected happens in one of their imaginative journeys, an unknown villain appears, and the two boys must now work together to fight or flee this new master villain - as they loose the fight and get kicked back into reality, they wonder - who or what was that ? terrified by their own imaginations they enter back into their own world with excitement , to figure out this mystery that so interrupted their fun. and through their quest, things will be revealed before their eyes. is it real, or just a fiction of their imagination ?

Possible Ending/reveal : not realized until the end of the story, they find that it was Andrew's Uncle (now tied up), trying to find his way to the bathroom. there might be a monster in some of the sequences also, witch maybe would appear to be Andrew's Dog.

a secondary plot suggestion :
superhero opening sequence. a master super villain appears in their second imaginary journey, it appears to be Andrew's older brother. angrily he tells them to stop their stupid imaginations. later on we swap between reality and imagination, as the boys take on their third journey to the master villain's layer (older brother's room). to seek for a thing that the older brother stole to teach them a lesson. something important to the story being told by the boys.
it ends in chaos, as the older brother finds out, it becomes an epic (imaginary) SuperDuper fight to the end. will imagination prevail, or will it be silenced once and for all ?
( possibly sticking to SuperHeroes and Super Villains only, maybe the layer is a space layer. something like the He-man Universe perhaps ).

idea development . . .
can imagination be dangerous . what is life without imagination . the wonder of imagination . extremes . fun children, boring adults . back to childhood . "there is a child in all of us" . Revenge . heroes an villain / good and evil . cooperation . teamwork .

Notes on the Storyboard #RE
The Chase Sequence - Heroes & Villains

Board 1#
First of I added an extra establishing shot (1) to clarify where we are, and possibly are going. Maybe there should be a wide establishing shot of the city before TRK-IN.
and as we Tilt / Pan up we TRK-IN on our hero, we cut to a medium shot, Panning up on our hero. He watches over the City. and as Robo Villain shows up I've moved the Robo closeUp (8) to be before the action. from here we have a lot of cutting. in shot (16) I added an arrow to indicate that the hero and villain are making a turn.
Board 2#
I enhanced the force of the hero's speed (17).
I added another shot of the car being smashed (20).
I changed the establishing shot of the street to clarify it better (21) as we see the roof top from (1-12). Robo villain jumps and smashes another car (22). he changes his arm into a huge canon laser gun something, and we TRK-out fast as he shoots and misses.
In shot (31 - 32) the hero's cape gets torched a bit as he turns from shot (30) towards Robo Villain. I noticed a flaw of the torched areas placement, so I changed that.
Board 3#
We TRK-IN fast from shot (32) to an extreme closeUp.
In shot (34 - 35) I changed the camera angles for better continuity and clarity within the stageline (I Think). the hero kicks the villain as he smashes to the ground.
the hero steps into the shot as the villain tumbles and falls. he gets picked up, defeated, as we hear the voice of the mother calling ( Andrew's mother ).
I added a crossover shot effect thing, to show the change.
they run out of the room and turn of the light.

End of sequence.

Lesson 6

Action:
Danger is not my middle name....it's Andrew.

heroes & villains - chase sequence :

goal : GOOD GUY WINS: hero wins /
PLAY: kids playing get interrupted by mother "Dinner's ready."

a simple chase scene.
storyboard starting point - we see the hero.
face close up of the hero, he is speculative.
he is standing on a rooftop, looking out over the city.
suddenly a shadow comes up behind him, he turns and there stands the robo villain.
the villain hits him and troughs him off the roof. luckily he is a super hero, so he lands on his feet in a cool fashion, then he starts running super fast, as the robo villain lands right behind him, also in a cool way. the chase begins. they jump over cars, smash into buildings and bust street signs. people are afraid, the robo villain changes his arm into a super villain cannon, he fires two time but the hero doesn't get hit. the hero gets mad, jumps and kicks robo villain as he also jumps falls, smashes and tumbles. the hero pic's up the villain. and all of a sudden we hear a voice call "Andrew, Henry - dinner's ready !" ... as it is revealed that it is only two kids having great imagination. they run out the door as "the villain" shuts the lights off, and slams the door.

Lesson 5

Developing Characters:
I watch because I care

Character Sketches and Doodles. <> Character References.

Plot and Character Development Notes : ( story may differ from the actual storyboard ).
surroundings : rainforest. (start out). a character out of place. not belonging in the forest, got there by accident. - big and scared.
( a bear, a hippo, an polar bear, a sheep, a fat dog, a fat lady, a fat cat, a cow, a pig, a fat chicken, a horse ).
a polar bear* is being transported from a zoo to the south pole, in a big crater carried by a helicopter. the wires brake, and it falls down somewhere in the middle of the transport-journey, and lands in a rainforest !
drawn inspiration : Madagascar - Open Season - Noah's Island.
the character is a big fat polar bear. he is strong but he doesn't know it, since he has always been a captivated/ domesticated and spoiled animal. - the crater is smashed and the polar bear wakes up from being tranquilized. the character is stranded :
1# - camera starting point : we see some rainforest mountains . ( something like in Jurassic park). the chopper flies by, we pass it to go into the forrest, there we get right up into the *polar bear's face as he wakes up by the sound of the chopper. 2# - very confused by the surroundings, he looks to both sides, "where am I, what is this..." he gives a great shout, and the birds fly away in a wide shot. 3# - an annoyed monkey sit in a tree, "why why why says the bear." the monkey hangs down, suggesting that he is some kind of captive animal ! , no no, I am the God of the "ZooWorld", the humans love me, I shout and they put their hands together." "so you are a zoo pet, animals don't belong in the zoo. we are to be free i the wild ! Just look at me! XD - "well ya, my world was kind of small, this looks a lot bigger." he tries to walk through the forest. as he sees a village in a valley below. "worshippers! :D they need me !" the monkey looks irritated at the polar bear again. 4# - he suddenly trips down the steep valley side, the people react, believing him to be a god. they start worshiping him. the polar bear likes being worshiped since it reminds him of being home and spoiled. - then trouble arises.

5# - finding his strenght, purpose, and eventually deciding to go be in the wild instead of going home to the zoo.
a long Journey . letting go of the past / childhood.
another character, a "wise" monkey perhaps. a helper to the polar bear. (character contrasts).

Lesson 3

Continuity:
How to keep your stageline clean and free from infection!

The Story : Zooming in on a house (Establishing Shot).
Sun is shining and its morning, man walks through the hallway in his morning rope, he slept in and is up late. He gets into the kitchen. Seeing his wife about to make a cake for some birthday. As he looks for something to eat in an empty fridge, turns and sees one egg left in the egg-holder. As he grabs the egg, his wife turns and shouts NO !" - this is the only egg left and I need it for my cake. they start arguing. "but Im starving, I need something to eat. "you where to buy me some eggs yesterday, but noooo!"... bla bla bla. The man puts down the egg, as they are fighting over it. - suddenly the egg cracks, and out comes a little chicken. they both stare at the chicken as he walks out confident through the front-door. a store is seen right across the street ... argument solved. ... they get back to arguing .. (maybe).

the actual storyboard differs a bit from the original story.
